Kali Bai Memorial (competition entry)
The idea is to depict the path which is leading to the history of the city which has gone through the times of fighting for literacy during the dark ages of riyasati system. The city demands a place where the local public and the visitors come along to witness the significance of Dungarpur and the story of brave Kali bai.
The proposed site offers a path of knowledge leading to the historical monument through the dark passage. The first step during the revolution was to open a school in Dungarpur. So in the proposed design, the symbolic structure “the gateway of
knowledge” has been designed through which all the visitors will enter an open court which represents the power of freedom. The water body at the center in the court symbolizes peace. The court contains traditional sitting which connects us to our traditions.
The white wall in the court represents the dream of literacy growth which was broken by riyasati system. So the opening through that wall leads to the dark path which depicts the struggle of people and ends up at the final revolution brought
by Kali bai in form of a memorial place at the center of the stepped courtyard. The jaali designed at the other side of the dark passage represents the hope in people's minds at the time of struggle. Visitors are provided with the pebbled path
which depicts the hardship of people to reach to the power of freedom.
The courtyard where the memorial is placed creates the central core of the entire complex. All the buildings meet at this central point. Stepped sitting is provided for the visitors to sit and connect themselves to the entire experience of the site.
The panoramic building is directly connected from the central axis of the courtyard where a memorial of Kali Bai is placed and the entrance from the gate of knowledge. The panoramic building is designed circular in form. Everyone has
the right to learn so the building has kept circular in form as it is equal from all sides and its structure depicts the power of knowledge. The north light has been brought to the panoramic building through the skylight. The gathering space is kept at the center for open discussions and movie projections. The circular path of galleries depicts the rituals of the temple of knowledge. The library and the cafeteria are kept directly at the edge of the pond to get a beautiful view of the surrounded mountains. The administrative building, cafeteria, and public amenities are provided on one side of the site for the purpose
of better connectivity.
